Melbourne Museum – Carlton
This is hands down the place I always recommend first. The Melbourne Museum is huge—you could spend an entire day here. From fascinating dinosaur fossils to the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre and the calming Forest Gallery, it’s a beautiful mix of science, history, and culture. Perfect if you’re travelling with kids (or just a curious adult like me!).
National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) – Southbank & Federation Square
The NGV is Melbourne’s pride and joy, and for good reason. Split into two locations, NGV International showcases world-famous artworks, while The Ian Potter Centre focuses on Australian and Indigenous art. I always pop in when there’s a special exhibition—it’s incredible to see international masterpieces right here in Melbourne.
ACMI – Federation Square
The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is unlike any museum I’ve visited elsewhere. It’s all about film, TV, and digital culture, with interactive exhibits that are super engaging. If you grew up watching Aussie classics or you’re into gaming and cinema, ACMI is a must.
Scienceworks – Spotswood
Scienceworks brings out your inner child. It’s hands-on, fun, and surprisingly addictive. I remember the first time I went—I thought I’d stay an hour and ended up spending half the day there. Highlights include the Planetarium and some really clever interactive exhibits.
Immigration Museum – CBD
The Immigration Museum is one of the most moving museums in Melbourne. It dives into the stories of people who left everything behind to start a new life in Australia. Walking through the exhibits, you really get a sense of how migration shaped Melbourne into the diverse city it is today.
Old Melbourne Gaol – CBD
If you love a bit of history with a spooky twist, the Old Melbourne Gaol is for you. Once home to the infamous Ned Kelly, this gaol is as fascinating as it is eerie. I did the night tour once—it was equal parts creepy and captivating.
Australian Sports Museum – MCG, East Melbourne
For sports lovers, it doesn’t get better than the Australian Sports Museum inside the iconic MCG. It celebrates everything from cricket and AFL to Olympic moments. Even if you’re not a die-hard sports fan, the interactive displays make it fun and engaging.
