The road from Perth to Esperance is one of immense natural beauty. From the white sandy beaches to the monolithic old-growth forests, there are countless awe-inspiring views to take in. These landscapes are for more than just looking. Imagine swimming with dolphins and feeding smiling marsupials one day then scaling a giant granite outcropping and surfing perfect turquoise waves the next. This trip is perfect for those who appreciate a little outdoor adventure.
Perth to Fremantle (VIA Rottness Island)Just 30 mins from Perth city centre, Fremantle is renowned for its eclectic mix of arty and alternative types with a buzzing nightlife. Outside the town centre you'll find gorgeous beaches and walking tracks and bicycle trails. Rottnest Island is only a 30 min ferry ride away. Its claim to fame is its countless beaches and its countless little quokkas. These friendly little marsupials are often found posing for pictures with their iconic and highly-photogenic smiling faces. For an added dose of adventure consider skydiving to really take in the views of the mainland, island, and ocean beyond.
Fremantle to RockinghamBack in the car for an hour drive and you’ll hit Rockingham. Here you can swim with friendly wild dolphins, fish off the jetty and kayak around the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Remember to bring a camera, this is a sight you won’t want to miss!
Rockingham to Margaret RiverAfter a three hour drive - not including a few minute stop in Harvey to snap a pic of the giant 10-metre tall orange - you’ll land in Margaret River. The area is known for its top quality wines and food. Download a map of the area’s 120 wineries ahead of time or ask locals for recommendations of their favorite stops. This afternoon is all about leisurely tours and tastings through the gorgeous hills of the area. We suggest stopping in at Vasse Felix - the wine estate that started it all back in 1967 - or Arimia Estate which makes sustainably produced wines and serves them alongside tasty dishes made from ingredients grown right on side.
Margaret River to WalpoleHop in the car for just under an hour and a half as you make your way to Walpole. The tingle and karri trees in the old-growth forest around the town are what give the area the name The Valley of the Giants. Spend your day in Walpole just getting acclimated. Pack a picnic and head out to the 800-metre boardwalk loop that runs through the trees.
Walpole to DenmarkBetter than taking the normal highway, The Mount Shadforth Scenic Drive will take you past farmland, forests, and the Ocean. Better yet there are plenty of scenic pull outs for snapping pictures as well as farm stands and small wineries to explore along the way. Within 50mins, Denmark is your next stop. Denmark is littered with soft sandy beaches and quaint boutiques and cafes for exploring. The first half of the day is best spent roaming the streets and lounging on the beach. Before heading off to your next adventure, stop by The Lake House for lunch. Grab a table at their dockside dining area and tuck in for a fabulous glass of wine and a light bite platter. After this beautiful semi-detour, its time to finish up the day’s drive to Albany.
Denmark to Bremner Bay (VIA Albany)This city is the first place Europeans set foot in Western Australia. It is also where the first convoy of ANZACs shipped out to fight in World War I. The area clearly has a rich history which you can learn more about during a 30-minute walk along the Amity Trail and visiting The National ANZAC Centre. As you head out of town, Less than two hours from Albany, Bremner Bay is known for its beaches. Spend the second half of the day soaking up some sun while surfing and snorkeling. Keep an eye out from January through April. Every year a pod of Orca whales make their home in the bay and can often be seen from shore.
Bremner Bay to EsperanceProbably the longest driving day, you’ll want to leave Bremner Bay bright and early to make the 4 hour trek to Esperance. This town is full of beautiful scenery. There are plenty of white sand beaches and views of the perfect ocean waters. The town also has a unique claim to fame in the pink lake. Head out for the final 40-minute leg of the journey. Cape Le Grande National Park has many beautiful natural attractions and fun outdoor adventures, but the most beloved happens at Lucky Bay. Each day, kangaroos from other areas of the park swarm the beach to eat nutrient-rich seaweed. Just make sure you have your camera ready.
